Meet Emily Burdick!

Emily has been coming to Serenity since November 2015!  I absolutely love her spirit and her enthusiasm for yoga!  I mean, look at that smile!  She currently attends most of Kendra's series classes, including heat and beats!  She has brought multiple friends to this class, encouraging them to try yoga for the first time!  We are so lucky to have Emily as part of our Serenity community!  Her smile and joy for life lights up the room!  


In her own words:

How long have you been practicing?

Regularly, I've been practicing for 2 years but before joining the Serenity Yoga community, I only went from time to time. 


How did you find your way onto your mat?

I started to show interest in yoga when I would wake up and my hands would be numb. I later found out that the way I was sleeping caused carpal tunnel in both my wrists. Ouch! I was hesitant to sign up for surgery so I began exploring other options to help my aching wrists. I had just started my first state-side teaching career and I was stressed out, which was not helping my wrists or my mental health. So my friend Amanda convinced me to try one of Kendra's classes and from day one, I was hooked! I've been going back every Monday ever since and my wrists have never felt better! 


What have you learned on your yogic journey?

Kendra said the other day in class, "just because it's hard doesn't mean it's wrong." That sums up my yogic journey in a nutshell. Biggest lesson I have learned: breathe through the hard stuff! That's a lesson I take on and off the mat.  In my journey through yoga I've leaned a lot about the power of breathing. My work as a second grade teacher can be stressful and so many moments in my day could lead me to feel stressed beyond belief, but I believe that my yoga journey has pushed me to breathe and notice, instead of freak out and panic. 


What advice would you share with someone who is new to yoga?

Laugh often. These poses can be tricky and complicated and sometimes you have to laugh it off because your foot is by your head and you are in a room full of people who are pushing themselves around a circle with blankets and it can be SO hard, but it also can also be pretty funny. Yoga can be a serious practice and it's easy to pass judgement on yourself if you don't nail a pose on the first try. Forgive yourself and remember to laugh it off and have fun with it! 


What’s your favorite thing about practicing at Serenity Yoga?

The community I've met just by consistently attending Kendra's classes. I've loved sharing this community with my close friends and bringing them to Serenity to experience a place that is friendly and accepts everyone right at the place they are in their life. It's a great place to try new things and look silly because there is a community supporting you every step, or bend, of the way!
